I should preface this by saying that I am already a great Hero Legend: Trails fan. It’s my favorite video game series, and Trails at Sky FC and SOUTH CAROLINA They are my favorite video game of all time. The difficult translation history the series has had in the past is something I find deeply unfortunate, and I’m just playing Trails to Azure in English now 12 years after it was first released in Japan. So, having been offered the opportunity to a Paths to reverie preview, the next game to be released in English, at PAX East 2023, I immediately said yes.
Right from the start, the graphics are amazing. Dream adopts its roots as an anime-style game and improves on the graphic style already present in the trails of cold steel series. While I love the sprites and the cute style of the cross bell duology, which are the most recent entries published in English, jumping from Azure to Dream It is a big difference. Just as colorful, if not more, DreamThe real beauty of is in the details that the graphics can have when designed for a modern console.
The second thing that struck me about the demo: It’s fully voiced in English! After being disappointed by the lack of voice acting in Zero and Azure, it is incredible to listen to Lloyd and company in scenes, dialogues and battles. The acting itself is good, and Elie and Lloyd’s virtual assistants in particular work very well.
DreamThe demo was actually the beginning of the game, which brings you back into the action after the Special Support Section. If you haven’t played the previous games in the series, you’ll have no idea what the heck is going on. While some people see that as a negative, part of why I love Roads as a whole is the close interconnectivity. Think of something like game of Throneswhere there is a huge cast of characters to follow, and now remove the sex scenes and apply them to a JRPG and voila, you have Roads. Having an action-packed start to the game is definitely a high note.
the combat of Dream is almost exactly the same as it was in Traces of Cold Steel IVwhich itself is the same core combat system that the series has been using since trails in the sky, but with minor tweaks and additions with each subsequent game. That being said, while the core combat is a turn-based grid system and fairly easy to understand, I wouldn’t want to get into Dream no previous experience in the series. With eight previous games to add to the combat system and play with it, the game gives you a lot of things to start with if you’re not already used to it, such as Arts, Crafts, and Links.
For fans of the Roads series, Paths to reverie It already seems that it is shaping up as another jewel, concluding the last of the threads of the plot of the cross bell duology and White weapon series. If you’re not a fan, it’s definitely not for you, as the game throws you into the middle of the action and plot that has culminated over nine previous entries, both for better and for worse.
However, for those who think Dream looks interesting but you are not familiar, we definitely recommend going through the previous entries on the Hero Legend: Trails series, starting with trails in the sky. With a few more months until Dream releases this summer, you may have time to squeeze them all in time.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie it was previewed in a compilation at PAX East 2023.
