Horror games have always been the next step for immersion compared to their TV and movie counterparts. Whether you’re slowly strolling through an Eastern European town in resident evil 4or looking through the mists of Silent Hill, being in control of your character brings a whole new level of fear to the experience. While these titles lean towards traditional horror, it’s hard to remember and not also recognize Dead space as an important element of the horror landscape. Dead space it showed that horror could be outside the box, in an unknown location and truly otherworldly. He Dead space remake totally understands the task of recreating that feeling and while it adds something to it, it also fully understands the original idea and sticks to its guns.
Players land on the derelict USG Ishimura, a ship that had been on a mission to mine a planet called Aegis VII. After losing communication with the large ship Isaac Clarke, the playable character and a small crew arrive to investigate what happened and help where they can. Within minutes of landing, the rescue team is assaulted by a disfigured humanoid figure; Bones stretched out elongating the human form as they created great singular needle-like fingers, muscular ligaments stretched to their limits as these creatures towered above the rest of the human crew.
Throughout this story, you will not only work to find a way out of the Ishimura, but you will also learn what caused the crew to transform into the Necromorphs, how some of the crew were complicit in the hellscape that occurred, and what is the true purpose of all this. So it could have been as simple as zombies, but in space, there are a lot of interesting religious and political scandals that touch on to set up some of the even bigger works that take place in dead space 2 Y deadspace 3.
It’s easy to wait with dead space reputation that even if you are starting over, you will have the idea that you are playing a horror game. The way he immediately puts you in a tense situation makes you feel almost safe behind glass as you watch what a Necromorph is capable of without fearing for your life. The next thing that happens is when one appears next to you and you have no choice but to separate yourself from your friends and protect yourself.
Isaac, as an engineer, is well equipped with the tools and brains to accomplish pretty much everything he needs to survive on the Ishimura, which is a lot. From repairing essential ships and systems to assisting in the synthesis of a virus to defeat a large entity known as the Leviathan, Isaac is the best person for the job. This works to the benefit of the other crewmates who can help with formulating plans and then tell Isaac to go and carry them out.
In the new version, Isaac has additional agency in that he has a full voice and takes on a larger role in the different conversations that take place. Isaac changes in the new version from being a character without agency and following orders, to being part of the team even though he always falls short. There are still a few ways that while we see Isaac become more likable, he acts aloof and stiff like he’s not, some notable moments include seeing key character deaths. There isn’t much of a reaction and instead Isaac just takes it and goes on with the mission from him. There could be some argument to be made that his reactions were muted due to the horrors he had already witnessed in the last few hours, or that he is so under the influence of the Marker that it doesn’t matter, but it still seems out of place.
Dead space the game has Isaac moving through the different parts of the ship overrun by Necromorphs. The first and best weapon you have access to, your Plasma Cutter is perfect for shooting the limbs of Necromorphs as they run, jump, or crawl towards you. The goal of killing Necromorphs is to amputate their limbs, leaving them in various states of completion.
It’s an extremely satisfying feeling to not only go for a headshot, but also to plan each shot around how you can paralyze your opponent. Pulling out the arms leaves them slightly less deadly, however a well-placed shot to the knee will drop them to the ground. When resources are limited on the harder difficulty modes, you can use this to your advantage by dropping an enemy, then stomping on them for the final blow.
A key aspect of Dead space is that all the important elements of the HUD, including your map, collectibles, and limited storage, are holograms projected from the engineering RIG Isaac uses. This obviously carries with it the idea that all of these menus are exactly how Isaac sees them, but it also means that anytime you want to check your inventory or where you’re going, the game doesn’t pause, leaving you as easy prey. while you’re looking for that Stasis or Kinesis recharge you swear you put around here somewhere. Key functions like healing are at least tied to a button press for quick access, so at least you don’t need to worry about that.
Some puzzles and world items have been slightly updated to give returning players a bit more experience. One of the main new items is fuse boxes appearing all over the world, where before you only needed to supply power, you will now also be forced to choose which of the few items receives power.
An early example of this is when you are forced to choose between power for elevators, doors, or lights and you can only choose two options. Unfortunately for Isaac, you need both the elevators and the doors to get out of the room. Throwing Isaac into the darkness immediately heightens the tension of the moment, allowing several Necromorphs to emerge from the darkness and stalk you. Another later example forces you to choose between having lights or oxygen, there isn’t a good choice, but no matter what you choose, navigation in the next section of the game will be slightly different.
both of Dead space It has been left intact, and rightly so, as it was a good game when it came out and it still holds up very well. Where Dead space It has received the biggest upgrade is in how it looks and sounds. Going from PS3 and Xbox 360 to PS5, there are all sorts of improvements, including redone character models and environments.
The already terrifying Necromorphs take on a new level of creepiness, as there are finer details in the shreds of clothing that indicate who these monsters were in life. You’ll know when you’re up against a former member of security or someone who probably just worked in an office. the illumination of Dead space it adds a lot to what sets the theme of the game. Going from brightly lit areas like the Bridge to utility rooms or sections of the Ishimura with no power, there’s always a looming sense of dread, but everything hits differently.
With terrifying visuals and lighting to set the mood, this is how it all works with the audio making for a perfect blend of horror. The Ishimura will creak and groan due to the stresses of space, causing players to jump even at a shower that starts at the wrong time. Hearing crawling through walls, Necromorph gurgles, and eventually a vent explosion as a Necromorph burst in screaming at you is the perfect setup for the horror the player should be experiencing.
